Gus Kenworthy has emerged as a double threat, mastering both slopestyle and halfpipe disciplines while maintaining a rapid ascent through the freeskiing ranks. Both his recent success and his childhood spent skiing the legendary steeps and backcountry of Telluride have put Kenworthy on the path to becoming one of the top all-around skiers in the world.

Kenworthy first gained recognition for his park skiing with one of his ski movie edits he posted on the Internet. Shortly thereafter he began filming with well-known ski production companies and working his way into the freeskiing elite, a place he intends to stay.

Kenworthy then had a clean sweep of the Aspen/Snowmass Open slopestyle and halfpipe skiing events in both 2010 and 2012, which he followed up by winning the 2011 and 2012 AFP overall titles. In the 2012 season, he competed in more than 23 events and took dual wins in big air and slopestyle at the final event of the season, the AFP World Championships.

After putting his time in, 2013 proved to be a breakthrough season for Kenworthy. With over 20 competitions under his belt, he took second at the Olympic venue halfpipe World Cup in Sochi, Russia and won his first X Games medal in Tignes: a bronze in slopestyle. The momentum is pointing Kenworthy exactly where he would like it to…to Sochi, Russia.

GUS SAYS
At the beginning of the season, my head was flooded with different goals I wanted to achieve and accolades I was hoping to garnish. Although it hasn't been a perfect year, it has definitely had its peaks and I feel like I'm in a great position to be in heading into next year's Olympic Games! Next season's qualification process is going to be more grueling and competitive than any other nation, but through that I think the U.S. will have the strongest team in Sochi, Russia and I feel confident that I will be a part of it!

FIRST TRACKS
While growing up in a town like Telluride, CO, it isn't uncommon to start skiing at an early age. Kenworthy’s parents got him out on the hill shortly after he was walking and he’s never looked back.

OFF THE SNOW
For the past few years, Kenworthy hasn’t had much of an off-season. He’s been traveling from one place to another, chasing the snow and living in a perpetual winter season. When he gets the chance to kick back and unwind, you can find him skateboarding. In the month leading up to the first events of the season, he spends a lot of time jumping on trampolines and doing as much off-mountain training as he can.
